MEET DROH'S MICHAEL PHELPS & MISS NIKKI

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

Poem from a Foster Dog

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love.
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss.
Along came a new family, they even have kids!
They took me to their home, forever to stay.
At first I thought you sent me away.

Then that second lesson became perfectly clear.
No matter how far, you will always be near.
And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on.
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.

But I'll never forget what I learned that first day.
You never really give your fosters away.
You gave me these thoughts to remember you by.
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time.
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine

The Mommy here........

As most of you know by now, I am a doxie lover.  Since I've been sick and I might mention BORED,
I have been trying to catch up on a lot of things including my previous pups and new doggies coming into both ATDR and DROH's programs. Today's post is about 2 special  DROH's  pups and DROH's annual
$15,000.00 FALL CHALLENGE. Details on that coming in a minute.

For the last month, I have been feeling useless, and the worst part, besides not being able to have Mona and Weenie with me, is not being able to do my beloved home visits for ATDR. It's amazing how much we missed during October, like the Halloweiner, The October Birthday party, Old Town Spring Pet Fest, College Station Pet Fest and a bunch more stuff for the kids to do.

So I want to share with you 2 special pups.

Update from MP's Foster Mom

Mickey is the lovebug I knew he would be. He warms up to strangers more quickly than before, but he is still cautious at first. He has interacted with my grandchildren and with men that he comes in contact with. He just needs at little more time than most dogs to warm up to children and men. His housebreaking is going well; although not 100% yet, I expect him to be there soon. He loves all dogs and would like to have a dog buddy companion to play with, especially if his humans are gone for any length of time. Squeaky toys, balls, and going for walks are all his favorite things.

Oh my, is this guy gorgeous or what!! A chocolate dapple longhair with blue eyes! My daughter says he looks like a s'mores, and he is as sweet as one too. He can be very shy at first, and might give a warning nip if someone moves at him too quickly. However, that may have been because he was so frightened, almost frozen with fear, and didn't understand what happened to his family and his world was turned upside down. Don't know all the details, but as a result of a divorce, this poor boy was given away. Mickey loves women, but is afraid of men and will bark, hide, cower, do anything to get away. He would do fine with older children, I recommend 12 and up as he has been fine with my 2 kids. So far, he seems to find one woman he likes and just glues himself to that person. At my house it happens to be my 13 year old daughter and he has literally become her shadow! They've spend many hours watching the Olympics together. Although we are just his vacation foster home, his foster mom says he has done the same thing with her. In fact when she dropped him off at our house, he hovered between her feet and didn't want her to leave! So, we all know he is a lovebug.
Mickey walks wonderfully on a leash, and his foster mom can walk 3 dachshunds at once without a problem! He looks forward to his daily walks and will also race after a ball and play fetch. Not a fan of being closed in a crate, he scoots under his foster mom's bed to sleep at night! Will update soon on housetraining progress, he is doing pretty well considering he's been in 5 different places in under a week! This little angel needs a calm home, with primarily a female caretaker that will spend alot of time loving him and giving him the feeling of being safe and secure.

While I was in the hospital, Judy told me she was going to be keeping MP for the weekend while his new foster was out of town. She sent this e-mail.

(left to right--Harley, Maisey, Brooklyn Bandit and George)

One amazing little dog. So sweet and has all my dogs chasing him around the back yard at the same time. Never, ever have I seen that! My dogs never play like that, especially not Harley. He's so fast, everyone but Bandit gave up and even he could not catch him - fast as lightening, streaking around my back yard, which he is loving. So much to explore.
I'd like borrow him a couple times a week to exercise my dogs..

If you go to the DROH website under dogs available for adoption, there is a tiny video showing just how fast he can be.

BTW.......his foster, Meredith, one of our Birthday Group, wants to adopt him but no official word yet.

Now meet my Nikki..........

Remember I told you about my first girl foster right after I adopted Mona in 2005? About how they didn't get along and she went to another foster which broke my heart. She is back.
Picture taken when she arrived from Oklahoma very scared an lonely.

These pictures were taken since she got home. Needless to say, if she doesn't get adopted soon and I ever get well, I'd love to foster her again. Mona is much nicer since she'd gotten older.

What a Smile.

From Nikki's Foster Mom:

Just wanted to let you know that Nikki seems to be settling in pretty well here. She has found her favorite sleeping spot and is getting along fine with our dog. She is a sweet dog and we're enjoying having her here while she waits for her new forever family.

Hello:

My name is Nikki and I'm looking for A forever family… again! I don't want to burden you with all the sad, sad details of my past, but I would like to you know why I need you to need me! A little over six years ago, I was taken away from my (original) owners because they mistreated me. I was covered in fleas and matted from head to toe when animal control stepped in and took me.

I was a mess when my lucky stars aligned just right and DRoH came to my rescue and I became a DRoH Dachsie! They got me all cleaned up and current on my medical care and found a really awesome foster home for me to go to. My foster family took me in and even though I was super shy, my foster mom and three dachsie foster bothers and a sister made room for me, fed me well, gave me a warm, safe place to sleep and they even shared their toys with me!

Thanks to my foster mom, who lovingly prepared me for my 2nd chance at life and love, I was adopted by some really nice people. They brought me home and there I lived, happy and loved, for about six years. But sadly, that was not to be the happy ending to my story. Not long ago, my owner passed away. I was so very sad, missing my owner who I love so dearly.

I went to live with my human sister, who, along with her family, were so kind to take me in, but it turned out that this wasn't a good arrangement for either of us.

She wanted to do what would be best for me, as she knew that's what my owner would have wanted, so this week, I took my first airplane ride when she flew in to town with me as I once again become a DRoH Dachsie and begin my 3rd chance at life and love. With that said... please know I'm a beautiful red, longhaired little girl! I may not be a spring puppy, but I'm a cuddly lover of life and know I would make a great addition to a new forever family who might open their hearts and their home to me.

Won't you consider my life story and become my forever happy ending?

That is wonderful that humans are willing to foster a pup and fall in love before finding a forever home for their foster pup. We hope you are healed very soon so your kids can be with their mommy too!
