My Adoption Story

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as you ever can."

Hi dear friends,

My goodness, it has been quite a day. I ate so much turkey, I can barely move. We had a wonderful time but I almost died of fright this afternoon. After lunch we went to visit Chris's daughter and she lives with 6 dogs, who knows how many cats, 3 miniature ponies, and 5 BIG horses. Mommy was in hog heaven. Besides dogs, she loves horses the best. But this post is supposed to be about my adoption story so you just gotta wait until tomorrow for a horsey post and why I got scared to death. So hear goes......

My brother Jacks and Me, 2005

When I was about 6 months, nobody really knows how old I was, I was found dogging traffic on Veterans Memorial Highway during a horrendous thunderstorm. I was terrified and soaked to the skin and cars were speeding by, honking their horns at me to get out of the way. I was going to die but a miracle happened. One car did stop in the middle of the road and a lady jumped out and took me off the street. Her name was Shelley and she knew I was a wire haired dachshund even though she said I looked like a drowned river rat. She was the director of DROH and she took me home with her and I became her foster until somebody would adopt a strange looking dachshund with wild hair. It would be a long wait until someone came for me to take me to my forever home.

In January 2005, Dr Ruth contacted DROH about a lady who had recently lost her beloved dachshund, Samantha, after 14 1/2 years. The lady was heartbroken and didn't want another dog but Dr Ruth knew better. She talked her into filling out an application. She got approved and picked several dogs she agreed to look at. A man and his wife, now my Uncle Ron and Aunt Deb, came to do a home visit and told her they didn't think any she had picked would be a good fit because the lady' s 70 year old aunt lived with her and the other dogs were to big and might be too rough for her. Ron said there was perfect wire haired girl that they thought would be a perfect fit but she had never met me. She told them to bring me over but that Dr Ruth wanted to make sure any dog she got was healthy, because the lady would have died if something happened to another dog. She would be at the lady's house to check out any dog she might get. So it was arranged that Ron and Deb would bring me over first and then another dog if she didn't like me. I was so excited that I might be getting a forever home but terrified that she wouldn't want me.

So Ron walked into this lady's house on a Saturday afternoon, February 19th, 2005, carrying me and the lady took one look at me and burst out crying. She took me from Ron and I started licking her face. That lady was named Sarah, who is now Mommy!!!

That was all it took. Dr Ruth said "so much for an examination", one look at Mommy's face and mine was enough for her. I passed with flying colors. I found my Mommy and my forever home and Mommy found a reason to smile again.

**********

Jacks, called Jackson at the time, was my foster brother before he became my full time brother. When Jacks was rescued by DROH, he was in terrible shape and Shelley brought him Mom with her. He was only a pup at the time and I was, they think, maybe a year at the time. I loved him so much and we became inseparable. Jacks was found in a huge garbage container where someone dumped him. When a trucker came to pick the container up, he heard what he was sure was a baby crying. It was Jacks. He had mange and oozing sores and was ashen in color. Shelley was afraid he was going to die and didn't want him to be die alone in a cage. Jacks and I grew up together, we slept together and played together but when the chance came for me to finally get a forever home, I told Jacks goodbye and I would never forget him.

Two weeks after my gotcha day, Mommy decided that she wanted another dog and guess what.........Jacks became Mommy's baby boy. My real name is Ramona but Mommy thought it was too formal so my name was changed to Mona Mi and Jackson became Jacks, but Aunt Annie called him Hobo.

**********

That's how it was. I started my new life and all the bad things were forgotten, but I'm still scared of cars and won't go near the street.

Love, kisses and {{{huggies}}} to all...........a very thankful Mona

What a wonderful story. A hard journey for your small self, but a happy ending.

It is OK to be afraid of cars because they go very fast and can hurt you.

Our love and best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving.
