JANUARY DACHSHUND ADOPTIONS (Long Overdue)

Dedicated to all the rescuers and fosters that make Rescue Work. God had a special place for all of you.

I am the bridge,
Between what was and what can be.
I am the pathway to a new life.

I am made of mush,
Because my heart melted when I saw you,
Matted and sore, limping, depressed
Lonely, unwanted, afraid to love.

For one little time you are mine.
I will feed you with my own hand.
I will love you with my whole heart.
I will make you whole.

I am made of steel.
Because when the time comes,
When you are well, and sleek,
when your eyes shine,
And your tail wags with joy
Then comes the hard part.

I will let you go-not without a tear,
But without a regret.
For you are safe forever--
A new dog needs me now.

Rescued: 01/14/14 --
adopted 1/25/14 Olivia Wilde

From Sophie's new family

Sophie Olivia is doing wonderfully. We love her so much. She is so sweet. Max, our 7 year old dachshund, and Sophie play all the time. Rascal, our 10 year dachshund does not play, but she tolerates her. I believe she is Pomeranian and long haired chihuahua, but she fits right in, and we do love her. The attached photo is of Max and Sophie Olivia.

Thank you again for all of your help. Hope you find homes for all the dogs. They all need loving homes.

adopted 1/25/14 Jennifer Lawrence

Rescued: 09/26/13 -- adopted 1/27/14 Mallory Morningstar

From Molly's new family.....

We've only had Molly (formerly Mallory) a week and she's already stolen our hearts and become a member of our family. She and her new sister Phoebe, a 3 yr. old terrier mix, are constant companions and spend all day playing and wrestling. They have so much energy that it makes us tired watching them. At night, both dogs join us on our big bed and crash until morning. Molly will gently wake you up with a little lick when she's ready to get up and go outside. Molly has really responded to affection and loves to be held. We are so happy to have our new little princess. Thank you, Dream Dachshunds, for all you do.

Mona here.............

As most of you know, I was adopted by the Mommy in 2005 from DROH after Samantha died. Then came my brothers,
Jacks, Siskle, Toby and Peanut, also adopted from DROH.
Then from ATDR, came my beloved brother, Mommy's little fella, Weenie in 2011 and now my sister, Prissy, adopted in 2013, after we tragically lost my Weenie.

Mommy gets so excited when she gets ready to do our adoption posts but January took forever, February is already over. Why does she do these posts? Because the thought of a dog never finding a forever home hurts and to see so many finally find happiness, even of only for a brief moment, makes her heart fly.

Prepare to cry, when you read about Pepper Poppins, I know she did.

Pepper came into rescue with a life threatening condition. DRoH’s vets made a preliminary diagnosis of “secondary hyperparathyroidism”. She could not stand, her feet (both front and rear) felt boneless and she appeared to be in pain. The sweet woman who originally transported her related that when Pepper moved crackling sounds were heard. DRoH wanted to make sure everything that could be done for Pepper was being done, so we took her to wonderful speciality vet care facility in Houston. They admitted her immediately to their critical care group. I waited for them to return with some good news. Sadly, that was not the case. Bottom line: Regardless of the cause (whether nutritional or a tumor on her parathyroid gland), her condition had progressed too far for any reversal to occur. She had no bones in her wrists or ankles, x-rays and bone imaging showed bone loss throughout her tiny body. The crackling noises we heard were most likely from micro fractures occurring when she moved or when we moved her. She was in pain. Sometimes what we wish for doesn’t happen. There was no “miracle” available for Pepper. On the ride to the clinic, I kept a hand lightly on her tiny head, and gently petted her. I was so afraid I was hurting her I would move my hand away. She would cry and reach her head towards me -- even though I know it must have been painful. When we arrived at the critical care facility, I offered her some rabbit snacks. She nibbled on my fingers for more. She had a sweet, sweet disposition and if it were possible to “will” her better, she would be running and playing now. While waiting for the vet to return, I decided we would adopt her. She would not leave this earth without being part of a family. And I prayed some “miracle” would be available. After conferring with the vet, the hardest decision anyone involved with animals has to be made. I held her in my arms and talked with her until she was gone. She is pain free now. I will bring her ashes home sometime next week. My little black and tan dapple girl.

Please do not be upset with Mommy for sharing Pepper's story,

and one last thing to make you smile.

Pepper's story did make me cry. I'm so glad that she knew what true love was before she went to the bridge.

Glad to hear Lovie is safe and happy.

I love seeing all the adopted pups! Those puppies made my momma have puppy cravings. Thank you for sharing Pepper's story. She was a beautiful girl and it is obvious that she was loved, even if it was only for a short time.
