SCHNITZEL AND PRETZEL AND A VERY SICK PUPPY AT DROH

Quote of the day:

"Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."

Yes, that is Bolo sniffing the flowers!

Dear friends,

Remember back in October, when Mommy & me went to Weinerfest in College Station? Remember Schnitzel, the little crippled boy, that Mommy feel in love with? Well guess what!!! There is a home visit coming up for somebody that wants to adopt him. Me and Weenie are keeping all our paws crossed that they pass the home visit and he has his forever home soon just like the 1030 that are the lucky ones from the time ATDR became the great rescue group they are today. No count for 2011 as yet.

SCHNITZEL

Now we have to to share some pictures and the story of a very special 13 year old rescue, named Pretzel, that has stolen Mommy and Aunt Judy's hearts.

Several weeks ago Pretzel lost his Daddy who had had him since he was a puppy very suddenly. His Daddy had heart trouble and had a massive heart attack while his wife and daughter were out shopping. He died. Pretzel was terrified and tried to help his Daddy but couldn't. When the wife came home, Pretzel was sitting on his Daddy's chest crying. She said it was too dramatic seeing Pretzel sitting on her husband's chest and she couldn't get it out of her mind so she turned him into a shelter in League City where Aunt Judy lives. She did not surrender her own dog who was there at the time. This is very upsetting to Mommy, Aunt Judy and everybody with ATDR. To lose the only home you have ever known is unthinkable

Thanks to the shelter, he is now safe with ATDR and starting on a new journey without his beloved owner. So Aunt Judy picked him up and agreed to temporally foster him. Uncle Raymond says there are plenty of doggies in his house already. She would adopt him but it's impossible. We would too if Mommy's health was better.

It turned out that his regular Vet is the same as Aunt Judy's and he told her that Pretzel is in perfect health but he is just old, losing his eyesight and going deaf.

Pretzel's intake picture

The first thing you see and get hypnotized by are his is gorgeous blue eyes.
Not a whole lot of people want to adopt or foster a senior dog and fosters are very scarce right now. There is a foster who lives in Georgia, that said she would take him if somebody could get him to her. So the wheels set into motion and another volunteer, named Sara, who works for Southwest Airlines volunteered to fly him there Mother's day weekend. Mother's Day Weekend! But that's what rescue is all about. You do what you have to do, when the opportunity arises.

So on Friday, since Mommy was home sick and Aunt Judy said misery loves company (she's got the same crude Mommy has) we headed to League City to see him one last time.

Pretzel is a tan dapple but in some of his pictures he looks red. Years ago, we don't know exactly when, since his Vet doesn't keep records past 5 years, Pretzel lost his tail. Not sure but we think it got caught in a car door. OUCH!!

Mommy thinks he's got a cute little butt with his little stumpy tail.

So Saturday, he started his journey to Georgia to meet up with his new foster Mommy, Melinda. Sara said he didn't like riding under the seat, in his little crate, so she held him in her lap, in his crate, all the way to Georgia.

PRETZELS IS IN DA HOUSE! (Update from Date: May 7, 2011 4:53:26 PM CDT)

What a sweetheart! He rode in his little doggie seat the whole way home, and seems to be very calm, cool, and collected about the whole adventure! We spent a good half hour out in the backyard, and since mine eat at 5:00, I fed them and he joined right in! Didn't turn his nose up at our kibble, but did turn down the frozen green bean chasers afterward!Lots of exploring, looking out the front door, in and out the back door, peeing on every single bush in the backyard, let out a bit of a cry when Tucker and I went out to get the mail, and now everyone is sound asleep in their own bed. After making a few cute grunting sounds while nesting in his blanket, he's now only got his nose sticking out from under it.

It was very difficult for Aunt Judy to turn him over to Sara at the airport Saturday morning and she cried all day Saturday. Me and Weenie think she is just as much as a pushover as ours.

The following pictures may be too difficult for some of you to witness so please

A few days ago Mommy got a e-mail from my Aunt Brinda, the wonderful lady that always gives us doggies treats at our dachshund/volunteer get togethers at Aunt Judy's house. You've seen her many times on our blog. Here is that e-mail:

Hi Sarah,

Take a look at the DROH website and see “Happy”. We got him yesterday and didn’t think he would make it through the night. He couldn't even stand up he was so weak. After a few hours of excellent care at Jersey Village Vet little Happy started showing some signs of improvement. He was transferred to the emergency care vet and he still has some critical times ahead of him but we think he will survive.

Can you mention him on your blog and ask your friends to put Happy on their prayer list?

Brinda

So Mommy went there and was horrified by the doggie she saw there and his story. He reminds her so much of little Joanie, the little ATDR dog, that so many of you in Blogville helped. She went to the Rainbow Bridge on Nov 1, 2009 after a 8 month fight to restore her health. We hope the same thing doesn't happen to him.

This is what she read at http://dachshundrescueofhouston.org/

We are low on funds and short on fosters homes.

But how could we turn away this poor little guy?

My name is Happy. I am happy DROH saved me! I was starved and only weigh 5 pounds! I have mange and am heartworm positive....but I am HAPPY this is the last bad day I will have because DROH rescued me!!

"Happy", as you can see from his picture, is malnourished and has a severe case of mange. He is receiving care at DROH's emergency vet.

UPDATE....as of today he is out of the emergency room and under regular vet care.

Please keep this precious little boy in your hearts and prayers.

Mommy has been crying the whole time she has been typing this for us, so we'll close for now.

Schnitzel is such a doll, so good to hear he is doing well and may have a good home in his future. Poor Pretzel, we were really thinking he was going to move in with Mona and Weenie.

And gosh, poor Happy - that is so hard to look at. We will cross our paws for him.

Happy Mother's Day!

I'm sending good luck and good thoughts to Schnitzel, Pretzel and Happy. May you all be healthy and find wonderful homes. Thank you to all that have taken great care of these wonderful babies. And to The Mommy, you cry because you have such a big loving heart. I hope you never change one bit!

There is such a lot in this one post. Schnitzel is adorable and we're sure he'll do OK. We are horrified that anyone could do that to Pretzel. Really shocked and so happy that he was able to have a good foster home and seems to be adapting. And that poor little Happy! I bet that if he's OK he'll end up being a great dog and will make someone very Happy. We will keep our paws crossed for all of them.

OMD - those poor little dogs. Can you imagine how miserable Pretzel must be? He witnessed his person dying, and then is shuttled out into the world? I'm always thrilled at the numbers rescues help, but always wish we wouldn't need rescues in the first place!

We will keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.

These little fellows have an amazing will to live. It breaks our hearts that a hooman was so bad to a creature that wants nothing more than to be loved. Thank goodness for rescue organizations like yours.

Hugs to your Mommy! I am so happy that all those dogs found a home. Pretzel definitely has beautiful blue eyes. That was a very sad sorry about his daddy. Poor old guy. I hope someone will adopt him. OH gosh! That poor Happy. It's so heartbreaking to see pictures such as these. The poor thing is just skin & bones. I know your organization will do a great job in bringing him back to health!

Mom's heart is hurting reading about all these sad little dogs. How horrible what Pretzel went through, to lose his beloved pawrent and then, to top it off, to lose the only home he's ever known, how could anyone ever do that??? But we are grateful and happy to read about his pawsome foster home and how he's doing much better there!

And poor, poor Happy. Again, we are grateful to read that he was rescued and hopefully on the road to recovery and a forever home.

We just wish that all doggies had a happy and loving home like we all do here in Blogville.

How could they do that to a poor little woofie, Mum cried looking at those photo's. The poor darling must be in so much pain. I am glad that he is now safe and will be helped. I am glad that the first sweet woofie got a lovely foster home but again it is just hard to believe that the woman could send him away after he had been there for his master. Some people amaze us. So thankful that there are caring people to pick up the pieces. Hugs GJ xx
