MISS SHELBY'S FANTASTIC NEWS & JIMMY DURANTE

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

(courtesy of Sagira)

"Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace."

                                                                      -- Albert Schweitzer

Dearest friends and Team Shelby supporters,

The day started out crisp and cold here in Houston, in the 40's, but the sun came out big and bright and with it came the best news we could have been given.

Shelby can start her heart worm treatment on Nov. 22nd!!

Shelby had a complete recheck today plus X-Rays. She is a grade 3 on the heart worm chart, with 4 being the highest. Her heart is clear but huge because of the worms. She will be taking Prednisone and Cephalexin until she starts her treatments. It will be a 3 step procedure. The first day she will have to stay all night. It will be her first night away from Sandra since July 3rd. Then a month later another treatment, etc. Waiting for the X-rays was nerve raking.

Something else was discovered on the X-rays that weren't seen before. At some point someone must have shot her because Dr Briles showed us where there were BB's in her backside. It is just another horror our poor Shelby had to endure.

Here are pictures taken this morning. After these pictures, I want to warn you that their are some pictures of another pit that was subjected to a horrendous injury, that we just learned about from Maziegal a few days ago. Please stop after Miss Shelby's pictures if you are weak of heart.

As most of you are aware of by now, Shelby loves to ride in the car. Here she is trying to climb in the front seat to help me drive. She and Mona have that in common.

She loves to hang her head out the window.

Sandra made the observation today, that Miss Shelby is the only dog she has ever known, that likes going to the Vet. Of course she does, her salvation and road to recovery came from those visits.

Hmmm, foodables.

A little snack.
Miss Shelby and Dr Briles.

On July 3rd, when Sandra found our Shelby, I saw for the first time the cruelty of man towards a pit. I was horrified and still am. To hear about the Michael Vick's of the world was one thing but to actually see what happens was another. That any man could be so cruel to one of God's creatures is beyond me. That day changed my life and the way I think of pits. A few days ago, Mazie told us about another innocent victim of abuse.

His name is Jimmy Durante and needs all of our prayers. He was found in a yard with half his nose cut off.
Here is the link to Jimmy's blog where you can follow his journey. He has had numerous surgeries already with many more to come. There is a Chip In button where you can donate to his care. We will be making our donation next Friday on payday.

Jimmy before surgery.

Jimmy after surgery

Words taken directly from Jimmy's blog:

Sometimes Jimmy is still in pain, and when he isn't he really enjoys himself. His mom hates to see him in pain, he is such a lover boy and just wants to please! It is such a miracle that with everything he has endured in his little life, he is so loving and trusting to humans, the same species that caused him to have all this pain.

Please help!!

Mazie asked the question:
Can he still smell stuff?
And then answer was;

Amazingly enough, Jimmy has an excellent sense of smell! He just has to bend his head the entire way down to do it. We have to be careful and keep checking his blowhole to make sure that nothing gets into it

It is ironic though, because it was told that the reason his nose was cut off was because they kept dumping him places, but he would always find his way home.

God Bless you all.....Sarah, Mona's Mom

Mona here.......my turn now.....

After all the happy news about Shelby. me and Mommy went to see Aunt Judy, the boys, Brooklyn and 2 little dachshunds, Aunt Judy is pup sitting.

Today DROH had a booth at Woofstock in Clear Lake. Me and Mommy are with ATDR now but my heart is still with the many friends we have there, so we went to see them but just for a couple of hours. So guess what? I gots to be a guest kisser in their booth.  Today's post was all about our Shelby's god news but tomorrow I'll post more pictures of our visit with some old friends.

We can't understand how any hooman can do such horrific things to a poor innocent animal. They only want to be loved.

We are very happy for Shelby!! We are so glad that everything is turning out so well for her!
We were so sad to read about Jimmy's story. How awful. We just do not understand it. Mom says it makes her sick- what people will do to innocent animals. She thinks it is so great that there are people in the world who are happy to go the extra mile for animals, too! We're glad, too!

We know Jimmy but we didn't know all of that about him. It kinda makes me feel selfish for having a raffle for ourselves when there are other dogs who are in much greater need like Shelby. She looks so happy. I cry to think that someone would actually shoot that sweet innocent dog. Sandra and you have done a great thing for Shelby! So many people love you girls and can see the goodness in you just from this kind act. I thank God that there are people like you both.

Love,
Kim

Shelby looks wonderful with all of the TLC she is getting. Mama is still shaking her head how cruel people can be - especially after she saw the pictures of Jimmy Durante.

Thanks for posting updates about Shelby.

What excellent news about Miss Shelby! I'm thrilled she can begin receiving treatments for her heartworm.

There's a special place in hell for someone who would do that to a dog. I can't even begin to comprehend how anyone would even CONSIDER cutting a dog's nose off! I truly believe in karma and the person who did that to Jimmy Durante will get his. One way or another...
