UPDATE ON SHELBY'S VET VISIT

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"To live live without Hope is to Cease to Live."

Hello dearest friends,

Mommy is taking over my blog again to let all of you know how it went at the Vet today for dear, sweet Shelby. I just wanted to show you a picture of me and my house quest Taz. He went home Saturday night. I miss him already. Mommy promised me she would do a post later with lots of pictures of us. Also she will do a post dedicated to Frankie Furtur about her trip to The Kemah Boardwalk and all the boats she saw. There was even a dog on one of them and Mommy said it looked just my dear friend. But right now Shelby is more important then any of that.

Before we move on to Shelby's report, Mommy and Sandra wanted to share some pictures of the pitties and the wee ones, as if anyone could ever forget all our dearest friends. I didn't get to go because Shelby is isolated and Mommy said today was not a PLAY DATE. I'm not mad but it sure would have been nice to see my man.

WARNING.....the pictures of Shelby which will be posted after her report are very hard to look at, so please stop after the Vet's report if you need too.

No introductions are necessary for our dear friends, but of course I made Mommy post my Tiger's handsome face first.

Mommy here......

Sandra & I took Shelby to Mona's Vet this afternoon. There was some good news but lots of bad news. First off she got a complete physical and I had Dr Briles give her all the shots that any other dog would be given at a yearly exam.

The good news is that the fecal exam was negative and he doesn't think she has mange based on what he saw when he did the skin scraping test but Sandra bathed her with medicated shampoo a couple of times and the mites might have been washed away so he will recheck again in two weeks. He doesn't think she was burned but the reason she looks so bad is because of bacteria and the hundred of bites & puncture wounds. He gave Sandra an antibiotic to give her twice a day for two weeks, called Baytril and a dip to give her today and another dip in a week, called Mitaban. That should help with the itching. He said he has seen dogs in worst shape than Shelby do really well with antibiotics. "My God! How could this sweet baby look any worse."

As we were getting Shelby out of my SUV, we discovered something we hadn't noticed before. Most of her teeth had either been pulled or sawed down. The doctor agrees with us.....you don't take the teeth out of a fighting dog but you do, if you plan on using the dog as bait. We can't prove it but we all feel that she was bred continuously until she wasn't useful anymore and then used as bait.

She is heart worm positive and will need to be treated for that. One of her eyes is useless and will either have to be removed or stitched shut. She will need to be spayed. There is a possibility she could be pregnant but we pray not. When she goes back, he will do bloodwork, etc.

For now he doesn't want to give her any steroid treatments until we see what happens with the antibiotics, the dips, complete bed rest and isolation from all the other dogs. He did give her a shot for pain today. On July 17, we take her back and he will redo the skin scarping to verify there is no mange & decide what happens next.

He said it is to dangerous to start her on heart worm treatment until we are sure she doesn't have mange. When the time is right we will have her spayed and the heartworm treatments started.

Sandra took Shelby home to care for her and she is in the best of hands, far better than mine.

I paid 251.00 for Shelby's visit & medications today. Dr Briles reduced her bill from 284.50 to 251.00. "God Bless him. He is a big believer in rescue and gives reduced rates to anybody helping rescue a dog, cat, etc....it doesn't matter what."

I hope that I have remembered everything but sometimes, when I get so upset, I tend to forget details. There were a lot of tears shed today but when Dr Briles said he thinks she could be saved our hearts leaped for joy.

There has already been many of you who have offered to help with her medical expenses and we can't thank you all enough. If you would like to help please e-mail me the the address on Mona's bio and I can send you our addresses. Please keep the prayers coming.

Before I close, I would like to share one thing. When I first posted about Shelby, I posted a picture, as I usually do, of an unknown flower with a lizard on it that Judy had sent me from her yard. I thought it was just a bunch of rather common berries but since Judy sent it why not use it. This morning, when I saw Shelby in the flesh for the first time I was horrified. I cried and thought to myself, the doctor won't be able to help her and she would have to be put down. When I came home for a few hours before her appointment, I found the picture at the top of this blog that Judy sent this morning. The same flower but with a beautiful bloom. Shelby will be like that, of that I am sure, given time and with the Power of the Paw on her side. If we do lose her, we will have tried.

God Bless..........Sarah & Sandra

I sent an e-mail. I couldn't send a whole lot, but together we could all really help defray some of these expenses. And I keep thinking that if Tivi could make it, maybe Shelby can, too.

Sarah & Sandra,

What angels you and Dr. Briles all are to help this sweet girl. Shelby is in good hands now, probably surrounded by love and caring people for the first time in her life.

I think it was Amber (Mayzie's mom) who first suggested going to the local tv stations with her story, is that possible? The more help you can get with finding out who did this too her, the better.
Stay strong Shelby!
Prayer and thanks to all of you!

I cried again when I heard that most of her teeth had either been pulled or sawed down. Oh she was used as a bait, cruel hoomans!
I applaud the great idea from Mayzie's mom to pull those nasty hoomans to justice.
I sent the green papers today, Mona, again thanks your mommy and Sandra and your Vet Dr. Briles from the bottom of my heart.
Shelby, you're in good hand, we wish you a speedy recovery and a good loving home soon.
Cheers!
Love y'all.

The things I think to do to people like that! Oh I get SOOOO upset to think of all the poor animals out there that can't defend themselves from idiots! Sorry -- didn't mean to rant....I just get so upset!

Mona, you and Sandra are angels on Earth.

Poor, poor Shelby. I don't know if this will make you feel better (I don't know why it would), but I've seen dogs in much worse shape pull through with veterinary care, good nutrition and LOTS of love. Unfortunately, our shelter sees a lot of Pit Bulls come through, and some are in pretty bad shape.

Shelby is so lucky to have met you and Sandra. Please keep us posted, and I'm going to send you an e-mail now to try to help out a little.

Hi Sarah and Sandra - I emailed you last night but haven't heard back. I hope you rec'd it. I would very much like to help. There will be lots more bills to come. I will email again tonight if I don't hear from you. My email could be out in the cosmos...

Thank you for posting this update. Your vet is right. She could be in a lot worse shape. From the looks of her, I'd say she has a good chance of recovering. Thank god she is now getting the love she so clearly needs. Thank you both for being her guardian angels.

Big hugs to you both (and of course all your pups too!)

Dear Sarah and Sandra, F.'s mom here. I told him he could NOT look at this post.
This is just a horrible thing for some crazy bunch of people to do to an innocent animal. I hope the rot in HELL for what they did to poor Shelby!!!
You two have a place in heaven for what you are doing for her NOW, though.
Bless you both. And I will have Frankie cross his paws for Shelby. He has no idea how other dogs are treated.
Damn those people to HELL.

There is no way to truly say thanks for what you all are doing for that poor girl! You are angels in deed! It makes my blood boil to think that humans--the COMPASSIONATE species--did this and allowed it to happen. I join Khyra in her hope that one day justice will be meted for Shelby and all the abused out there. If you need help with offsetting some of the costs please post...there are LOTS of us out here in blogland that want to help.

Sending a check today. How could people do this to an animal! Thank God there are people like Sandra and you in this world who will take time to help a severely injured creature. Her heart (and yours) are as big as the beautiful state you live in. Sandra has so much on her plate is there anyone who could take Shelby in once she is healed and give her a safe and secure home?

On a happier note, Mona and all the Pitties and Wees look wonderful. It was nice to see pictures of them. Little Tiger is just adorable!!! Sending love to you all. xoxoxoxo

Gosh dang it!!! I am so sad, mad... I'll just go with the obvious: THANK YOU. I swear I'd be doing the same thing. But it shouldn't be this way. As for your vet, nice of him to understand what you are doing.

God bless you! We came here from Lola's bloggy. We have a suggestion. Open a PayPal account and place one of their buttons on your bloggy. That way folks can just click, click, click and send you money right away to help with expenses. If you need any help, let our momma know. If you would like a button designed for your bloggy for donations, just ask our momma and she will help with that, too. She can make the kind where folks can take it and put it on their bloggy's and then one thing just might lead to another and it will be good! If you happen to get too much money what you can do is donate it to your local shelter☺

All I can say is you and your friend are that dog's angels. I wish there were more people like you in this world. I am sitting here bawling my eyes out, not because pit bulls are my passion, but because I love animals. Those responsible for Shelby's horrific condition are heartless, low rent pieces of trash who deserve exactly what they inflicted upon Shelby and far more.
I will share this story on my blog and my pit bull forum and hopefully spread the word. Your veterinarian, your friend as well as yourself will never be forgotten by this sweet pit. I will keep checking on her progress. On behalf of the pit bull community: THANK YOU for all you have done.
