  DACHSHUND ADOPTIONS MAY 2014

Quote of the day:

"Old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to."
- -Joe Gores

Sorry for the delay........June adoptions to follow soon.

Not all shelter dogs make it home like the dog in the "Final Countdown", that's why rescue organizations are so important.
Please consider being a volunteer with any rescue group. We all need help.

The Final Countdown
by  Courtney Bailey

My Shelter Days are numbered ten.
Ten more days until my end.

My Shelter Days are numbered eight.
Please adopt me. Change my fate.

My Shelter Days are numbered six.
Adopt a pet week, still no one's pick.

My Shelter Days are numbered four.
Four more days and then no more.

My Shelter Days are numbered two.
Someone will take me, I just don't know who.

My Shelter Days are numbered none.
I know I'm finished, then you come.

My Shelter Days are over, done,
Because you, my master, took me home.

 Description:

Wilma is a beautiful miniature red dapple female that came to us through Austin Animal Control.  Wilma was injured in some kind of accident which caused an infection and eventually to have her bad leg amputated.  She has fully recovered and doesn't seem to miss the injured leg at all.  Wilma walks well and is now used to having three legs!

Wilma is a petite red dapple girl that loves everyone in her foster home.  She is smart and is great with the other dogs in the house.  Wilma is easy to live with and will make someone the perfect companion.  If you have a heart for a bit of a special needs girl - Wilma might just be the one!

Lovie Update

(Mrs. Foster Mommy) am so thankful for the opportunity to be able to take care of Lovie. She, in so many ways, reminds me of “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!” She has been in the care of DROH since March and from what I have been told by her Doctors that she is making wonderful progress. We have had her for about 2 months and I have learned a lot about dogs who have IVDD. When she was first recovered by DROH, she was paralyzed in both back legs, riddled with skin lesions and not doing so well. Today is a different story, her main Vet at Jersey Village Animal Hospital - Dr. Justus - gives her weekly acupuncture treatments, which are stimulating her muscles and Lovie is doing great. She wags her tail and constantly moves her legs. We will continue on with the treatments as long as Dr. Justus thinks she is improving… and she is. Also, Lovie has been to see a Specialist who has been wonderful and is working with the incontinence issues that Lovie has. Lovie has also is been treated for skin issues and infection in her bladder possibly due to a mineral build-up that has occurred due to her IVDD. Our mornings consist of leg wraps, diapers, diaper wraps, and a device that we made from a Neck Roll that we put her in around her waist, which keeps her back legs off the floor and allows her to scoot all of the house. We do sling walks during the day, along with water aerobics and massages to keep her muscles constantly stimulated.

Lovie, you see, does not consider herself disabled. She does whatever the others do (with some modification) and she always has kisses for me, a testament to how loving she really is. We are very encouraged by all her progress and continue to pray for her to regain the ability to walk. It is a long, hard endeavor for her and she appreciates so much the opportunity that DROH has given her to have a quality life again.

Thank you for all the sponsors and individuals who continue to give so that Lovie can continue her treatments. Without all of you, this would not be possible.

 Pamela's Mom's comments.......

Heidi and her Mommy

I thought I would give you an update on Pamela now Heidi. When she first arrived at our house my dogs thought she was my dachshund that passed away two months ago but after a quick sniff they all realized she was someone new. Heidi has fit in wonderfully with the other dogs in the house. She immediately found her dog beds and respects everyone else's. Day one she enjoyed our daily 2 miles walk and on day two she got acquainted with the boat ride and the park in Lake Conroe. We are thrilled that she has fit in so quickly. She will have a wonderful forever home here.

 Comments from Bonnie's forever family.

Bonnie saw the vet and he says that she is doing very well. This was great news considering everything that she has gone through. She has adjusted very quickly into our family and is enjoying all the love and attention that she gets from all of us. She is so very sweet and also very playful at times. We feel very blessed to have found her and are glad that we could give her a forever home. Thanks DREAM for all you do!

Comments from JoJo's Mommy.

I took "JoJo", as we are affectionately calling him now, to our vet on Saturday and got him all set with a new round of heartworm preventative. I'm happy to report, he was still heartworm negative and healthy on all other aspects. His other name is "Lick Lightening" as he loves to catch us off guard and sneak in a quick lick. I've been using that skill to help me wake up the girls in the morning. It's amazing how fast they wake up after a few licks.

Attached are some of the photos I keep with me of him. It has astonished everyone how fast this little guy has warmed up so quickly and fit into our family. He is still learning to get along with our 2 cats as he wants to play chase with them since one of them squeaks just like his favorite tennis ball. It's quite comical at dinner time with all of them giving each other the "eye" while they eat. One of the pictures is JoJo's favorite look to give us as you can almost hear him say "aren't you going to play with me". My daughter's fall for it every time. His favorite pastime is playing with his tennis balls and the other is to be chased by one of us around the yard. After about 10 rounds, he is ready for naptime as that is the other picture. If he doesn't crash on his favorite pillow it's on my lap or my husband's. The neighborhood kids have also fallen in love with him and have to come say hi to him when we take him for his evening walks. He just eats that up as you can imagine. I'll send an update in a few weeks as he is going on his first camping trip with us next week.

It makes me smile to see all those doggies who have all found furever homes. I just wish my neighbor's Doxies would have a better home. I turned the owners in earlier this summer for leaving their dogs out 24/7 and having very little human contact or affection, but nothing happened. Makes my heart hurt for them.
